For a large beach replenishment project Skeye measured terrain heights using a UAV. The client, the Ministry of Public Works of the Netherlands, wanted to know accurately all the heights of the beach prior to commencing the replenishment works. By re-measuring these heights during and after the works a good calculation can be made of how many cubic meters of sand have been added.
For this project Skeye made use of the Bird-Eye system, this is a fixed wing UAV equipped with a camera and a GPS. Over 1200 individual images were taken and combined to produce a terrain model with more than 50 points per square meter.
The Ministry carried out control measurements to check the heights as measured by Skeye and these indicated an average difference of a mere 3cm!
